Heavy snow causing transport difficulties across Romania

News about: Romania

BUCHAREST, Feb 8, 2010 (AFP) - A Romanian policeman told Monday how he helped deliver a healthy baby boy after taking instructions on his cellphone from medics who were stuck in heavy snow.   "The ambulance service called me and told me what medicine to give her to relieve her pain", the 25-year-old Dorin Parsoaga told AFP, as he recounted the labour and delivery at the unnamed mother's home.

A doctor eventually arrived at the home in the Poienei region which was one of the areas worst hit by the heavy snowfalls which blanketed southern Romania.   In the department of Calarasi, some 300 people spent the night in the local hospital and the town hall after being forced to abandon their cars.   Snowstorms also caused the cancellation of more than 60 train services.

The weather also caused disruption in the capital Bucharest where schools were closed while the roads linking the capital to the southern city of Pitesti and the Black Sea port of Constanta were closed.   Weather conditions are expected to improve in Romania starting from Tuesday, officials said.
